We’ve been getting a lot of enquiries on how to fix Telco Lock for both iPhone and Android. Let’s begin with a short description of Telco Lock and how we can avoid or fix this issue.
What is Telco Lock
Telco Lock is when the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Malaysia bans mobile phones, purchased via Telco companies in Malaysia, in which it blocks usage by any Malaysian sim card.
How to know? Well basically, if “No Service” appears on your current mobile phone, but when you put the same sim card into another mobile phone and there is a signal, it can almost be said to be Telco Lock.
Under What Circumstances Does It Happen?
When you sign a mobile phone installment plan, such as Celcom’s EasyPhone, Maxis’s Zerolution, DiGi’s PhoneFreedom 365, and fail to pay the installment and phone bill for three consecutive months, the telecommunications company will report the device to MCMC, which then bans the phone from using any Malaysian SIM card.
What Type of Mobile Phones Can Be Affected?
Your phone has the potential to be Telco Locked if purchased from an unauthorized or non-official store. Even if you buy it at a mobile phone store, there is still a risk. The previous owner may have signed a Telco package and later sold the phone to a retailer. If they fail to pay their bills, the device gets locked.
This applies to both iPhones and Android phones.
What Should You Do If You Bought a Telco Lock Phone?
If you find yourself in this situation, locate the receipt and return to the store for compensation. If the store refuses to take responsibility, you can file a complaint with the Tribunal for Consumer Claims Malaysia to seek a refund.
If you purchased the phone online from a stranger, unfortunately, you will have to resolve it yourself.
How to Fix Telco Lock and Can It Be Repaired?
For iPhone models X and above, it can be repaired. For Android phones, we can unlock certain models. Contact us to check if your device is eligible. Beware of scammers claiming to permanently unlock Telco Locked phones. Many methods only work temporarily, and the phone may get locked again within a month.
I Have a Telco Lock iPhone or Android Phone, What Should I Do?
Your best option is to sell it overseas (Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, etc.), as Telco Lock only applies to Malaysian SIM cards. You can also use a foreign SIM card with roaming services, but a Malaysian SIM will not work, even abroad.
How to Avoid Buying a Telco Lock Phone?
If you buy a new phone, try purchasing from the official store. If you buy a second mobile phone, remember to request the previous purchase receipt, and the purchase receipt must be from the specialty store. Do not accept the receipt from the mobile phone store.
If you want to buy a secondhand iPhone, you can go to Singapore to buy it. Not only it’s cheaper but the probability of Telco Lock is 0. As for the warranty, the iPhone is now an international warranty and any Apple repair center will accept it.
How to Make Sure an iPhone or Android Phone is Not Telco Locked?
For iPhone:
- Go to Settings > General > About > Network.
- If “Phone Not Allowed” appears, your phone is Telco Locked.
- Dial #06# to check your IMEI. If nothing appears, it may be a Baseband (Motherboard) issue.
For Android:
- Go to Settings > About Phone > Status > IMEI Information.
- If the IMEI is blocked, your phone is Telco Locked.
- Dial #06# to check your IMEI number.

I bought a new Iphone 11 Pro Max from a friend a few months ago. As long as you go abroad, it is no different from an ordinary phone. If you use a foreign Sim card locally, you can use roaming services, but if you use a Malaysian card in a foreign country, you can’t use roaming.
